The Sanctuary is grateful for its ongoing conservation partnership with BIOFUND, the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity, a Mozambican environmental fund that mobilises and manages financial resources for the exclusive benefit of biodiversity conservation in Mozambique.
a partnership that began in 2017
The partnership began in 2017 with an initial grant of 20 million Meticais over four years to support conservation operations. Since then, BIOFUND has continued to provide annual support that helps cover routine, high priority conservation costs.
As at 2026, BIOFUND’s support to The Sanctuary totals R15.84 million since 2017, strengthening the operational capacity required to protect a large, dynamic coastal conservation area.

operational support that keeps conservation work moving
BIOFUND’s annual support, approximately USD 120,000 per year, helps fund core operational needs including:
-
ranger uniforms and rations
-
operational tractor and vehicle fuel
-
patrol boat fuel
-
fence monitor salaries
-
turtle monitoring
-
beach cleaning
In addition to the above, BIOFUND’s support has assisted with routine conservation activities such as human wildlife conflict mitigation, wildlife monitoring (including camera traps), alien plant clearing, and patrol management devices for rangers.
strengthened turtle monitoring and field reporting
Support for turtle monitoring has contributed to improved field coverage and data capture. In the most recent reporting period, 42 turtle monitoring records were logged in EarthRanger, a significant increase, with 24 nests recorded.
beach cleaning employment and daily effort
BIOFUND’s support also contributes to ongoing beach cleaning, with three women employed year round for this work. Average collections are approximately 50kg per day, supporting both conservation outcomes and local livelihoods.
investment in solar energy and essential infrastructure
An additional priority enabled through this partnership has been investment in solar energy infrastructure at the workshop and office, supporting staff housing, operations, and water pumping. This included a USD 100,000 loan repaid over three years, with significant operational savings thereafter.
Linked infrastructure upgrades have included the Linene and Chingonguene pumphouse upgrade, converted to solar with a three phase 2.2kW pump and generator backup.

additional initiatives facilitated through biofund
Beyond routine operational support, BIOFUND has also facilitated additional initiatives linked to conservation and community benefit. These include the Cartão BIO supported OffGridBox system implemented in Chingonguene to support clean energy and safe water, and BIOFUND’s wider work with partners such as SIDA through programmes that strengthen biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
acknowledgement
The Sanctuary acknowledges BIOFUND’s continued support and the practical role it plays in sustaining day to day conservation operations, strengthening monitoring systems, and enabling key infrastructure improvements that benefit both conservation outcomes and surrounding communities.
